John - Chapters 7 & 8

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

Hebrews 11: 1

The Greek word for faith is pisteuo (pronounced “Pis-tay-U-o”). It is best translated as three different but closely related words: “faith,” “believe,” and “trust.”

The Bible

How do we know who God is?

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN - CHAPTER 1 (versus 1 & 14)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

The attributes of God ……

 Another reminder:

This website endeavors to provide the basics of a foundational Christian belief structure. Catholic or Protestant denominations are not mentioned in the Bible. Christian Ordinances are practiced in different ways. A Baptist approach / perspective is presented for these observances.

Theistic understandings of God.

“God is One.”

Monotheistic

Agnostic - without a knowledge of God. A person who doesn’t know if God exists or not.

“There are many gods.”

Pantheistic

“There is no God.”

Atheistic

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

God is TRIUNE

One in Essence, Three in Person: The Mystery of the Trinity

Lecture by R.C. Sproul

TRINITY

God exists eternally as one divine nature, substance, or essence, comprising three co-equal, co-eternal and consubstantial persons:

Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.

Each person is fully God, but is also distinct.

The trinity is a difficult concept to grasp.

The following illustrations MAY help ……

“Is it One God or Three Gods?”

Consider the “Units” …..

One banana + one banana + one banana = 3 bananas

One apple + one banana + one pear = bowl of fruit

A banana, an apple, a pear, and a green leaf arranged together against a white background.
A colorful diagram showing the Christian Holy Trinity. It has circles labeled 'The Father,' 'The Son,' and 'The Holy Spirit,' connected by lines with the statement 'Is Not' and 'Is' to illustrate the relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, with God at the center.

Water - can exist in three different and distinct states depending on environmental conditions …….

Solid (Frozen) - less than 0 degrees centigrade

Liquid - between 0 - 100 degrees centigrade

Gas (vapor)- more than 100 degrees centigrade

The Lord’s Supper

Partaking of the Lord's Supper is significant and full of meaning for the Christ follower.

God is transcendent ……

Outside of time

—TIMELESS

Outside of space

Outside of matter

— IMMATERIAL

What is Prayer?

“Prayer is spiritual communication between man and God, a two-way relationship in which man should not only talk to God but also listen to Him. Prayer to God is like a child’s conversation with his father. It is natural for a child to ask his father for the things he needs.”

Jesus is fully God and Jesus is fully Man

Hebrews 1: 3 says Jesus is “the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.

The author of Hebrews uses the word in reference to the oneness of God. Both the Father and the Son are of the same “nature.” Jesus is “the exact imprint of his nature.”

THEOLOGY

1.       the combination of divine and human natures in the single person of Christ.

 Man / Mankind

There are three (3) elements that comprise the whole person: body, soul and spirit.

Body - the physical portion of a person.

Soul - the seat of emotions, will and intellect.

Spirit - the innermost part of a person. It is through the spirit that individuals can have a relationship with God.

Baptism

Jesus did not come to make “bad people” good, He came to make “dead people” live.

Baptism is a symbolic act that proclaims a new spiritual birth has taken place.

Baptism is meant to show the world that that you love, trust and have put your hope in Christ.

It’s like a wedding ring.

Let’s say I’m not married right now, but if I put a wedding ring on my finger, would that make me married? No, of course not. Similarly, I can be baptized in a church, but that doesn’t make me a true believer in Christ. Imagine that I really was married, though. My husband and I really did go through the marriage ceremony, but I just didn’t have my ring on my finger. Would that mean I wasn’t married? No, of course I would still be married. Similarly, I can be a believer in Christ, but not baptized, and my sins are still paid for and forgiven by God. But imagine that I truly was married and I really, really loved my husband. Would I wear my wedding ring? Of course! I would love my husband and want the whole world to know it! In the same way, if I have trusted Christ to save me from sin, and He is the lord and joy of my life, then I’ll want everyone to know about it. So baptism is a statement to everyone who sees it that I have trusted Christ for my salvation and I’m committed to living for Him.

The Parable of the Sower

John MacArthur - Believer's Baptism Message

The word worship comes from an Old English word weorþscipe. It means worthship or to ascribe worth to something. Our worship, therefore, has everything to do with God’s worth or value to us.

What is Worship?

“Worship is the submission of all of our nature to God. It is the quickening of the conscience by his holiness; the nourishment of mind with his truth; the purifying of imagination by his beauty; the opening of the heart to his love; the surrender of will to his purpose--all this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable.”

William Temple

 CHRISTIAN ETHICS

The Doctrine of Sin

Sin is “missing the mark

Sin is any thought, attitude or action contrary to God's will and his perfect character of love. It includes the breaking of any of his commandments.

“Sin takes you further than you want to go, keeps you longer than you want to stay, and costs you more than you want to pay.”

Unknown

We must cast off before we can put on.

"The rags of sin must come off if we put on the robe of Christ. There must be a taking away of the love of sin, there must be a renouncing of the practices and habits of sin, or else a man cannot be a Christian. It will be an idle attempt to try and wear religion as a sort of celestial overall over the top of old sins." Charles Spurgeon

Hebrews 9: 22b

“Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness [of sin].”

“Blood” is the “currency” required for forgiveness of sin.

Consider buying a meal at a local McDonalds:

What would happen if you tried to pay with “pesos” [Mexico’s currency], or “yen” [China’s currency] or “rubles” [Russian currency]? The merchant wouldn’t accept the form of payment. McDonalds expects payment in dollars [U.S. currency].

The same is true for God. He accepts only blood as payment for sin.

Consider the Biblical progression as it relates to “payment” for sin.

Adam and Eve sin in the Garden of Eden. They eat from the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil.

Sinful behavior by the children of Israel living in bondage.

Sinful behavior by the children of Israel while in the wilderness as they approach the promised land.

Sinful behavior of all mankind.

WORLD

The first blood sacrifice is performed. God kills an animal to provide clothing for Adam and Eve.

Moses tells the people of Israel living in Egypt to kill a lamb and put the blood on the door post and lintel. The death angel sees the blood and “passes over” the home.

The high priest is instructed to kill an animal and sprinkle the blood on the ark of the covenant in the Tabernacle.

John the Baptist says this about Jesus, “Behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. Jesus is crucified on the cross for payment of sin. God sheds His blood providing the payment for all in a perfect sacrifice.
